Automotive Odor Removal - Chlorine Dioxide Cup
-
The Detail King Automotive Odor Removal Cup is a single-use chlorine dioxide (ClO2) vapor generator that destroys foul odors inside vehicles by oxidation rather than masking. Add the activation liquid to the microreactor pouch, set the cup in the cupholder, and the ClO2 vapor diffuses through every fabric, foam, vent, and headliner panel in the cabin. Available in two release speeds and two pack sizes.
What’s in the kit:
- Microreactor pouch sealed in the cup
- Activation liquid included
- 200 to 300 square feet of coverage per cup
- 15 to 20 ppm ClO2 release for the first two hours, then 5 ppm for another hour, zero ppm after 5-6 hours
- Standard (3 to 6 hour) and Quick Release (20 to 30 minute) versions
- Single cup or 6-pack quantities
Detail King’s chlorine dioxide cup eliminates extremely foul odors. The Standard cup finishes the job in less than 6 hours, and the Quick Release cup finishes in 20-30 minutes. This product does not mask odors; it completely exterminates them, penetrating every affected interior component with deodorizing power.
Because it diffuses as a vapor, it reaches places liquid cleaners cannot: the foam under seat fabric, the felt backing of the headliner, the resin inside HVAC evaporator cores, and the trunk-liner cavities behind the rear deck. An enzyme cleaner like our Bio-Zyme digests organic residue trapped in carpet fibers, but cannot enter a sealed evaporator core or treat cabin air.

Who this is for
- Used-car dealers and recon shops prepping smoke-vehicle trade-ins, off-lease pet-owner vehicles, or auction-purchase reconditioning
- Mobile detailers offering smoke, pet, or mildew odor removal as a paid add-on service
- Restoration and biohazard remediation technicians handling insurance-claim interiors after spoilage, mold, suicides, or extended sitting
- Rental and fleet operators turning vehicles around between renters who smoked, transported pets, or left food behind
Which version do I need? Quick Release vs Standard
Quick Release (20 to 30 minute treatment): recent or moderate odors where turnaround time matters. A vehicle with recent spills, one that has been smoked in once or twice, a recent musty or stale smell. Best for retail recon lots that need a same-day flip and for mobile detailers running multiple stops a day.
Standard (3 to 6 hour treatment): more severe or long-soaked odors. A vehicle that has been sitting for an extended period of time with mold inside, one that has been smoked in regularly, organic matter or spills that were not treated quickly, a vehicle that has had animals in it regularly. Best for heavy-recon and biohazard jobs where the contamination has had time to penetrate foam, padding, and ventilation ducts.
When to reach for ClO2 vs Bio-Zyme
- Use the chlorine dioxide cup: smoke (tobacco, fire damage, marijuana), pet urine that has dried into upholstery, skunk spray, mold or mildew from a leaked sunroof or rainwater intrusion, dead-animal or spoiled-food odors, fuel or solvent fumes, musty long-stored vehicles
- Use Bio-Zyme instead (or first): fresh organic spills you can see and reach (vomit, blood, urine, food) where the protein needs to be enzymatically digested at the source before the residual odor can be oxidized
- Use both, in sequence: heavy biohazard or smoke-and-pet combo jobs. Spray Bio-Zyme on the visible contamination, extract, let dry, then run a Standard chlorine dioxide cup overnight to neutralize residual cabin and HVAC odor
Why chlorine dioxide over air fresheners
Proven chemistry, not a cover-up. Chlorine dioxide has been trusted in agricultural, food, and water treatment for over 50 years, so the active chemistry is well understood rather than experimental. It does not perfume over a smell, it oxidizes the compounds causing it, which is why the odor stays gone once the cabin airs out instead of creeping back a day later.
Sized for whole cabins, not just the seat you can reach. The per-cup coverage is generous enough to treat all vehicle sizes in a single placement, and multiple cups can be used to handle boats, RVs, houses, hotel rooms, etc. That makes it worth keeping on the shelf for the odd flood, spoilage, or dead-animal emergency, not only routine vehicle recon.

- Chlorine dioxide compound is one of the safest and most powerful odor removal systems known to man. This compound has been used in agricultural, food, and water treatment industries for over 50 years. Why use anything else
- Remove the harshest of odors. The Automotive Odor Removal System will eliminate lingering odors from mold, mildew, tobacco smoke, skunks, spoiled food, gasoline, sour milk, vomit, urine, and pet stains.
- Each chlorine dioxide cup provides 200 to 300 square feet of coverage. This product has an enormous range of coverage that can remove odors from very large vehicles such as RVs. It doesn’t mask odors; it destroys them for good!
- Applicable to more than just cars and trucks. The Chlorine Dioxide Cup can be used to clear foul odors from boats, houses, hotel rooms, freezers, and other confined spaces. Great to have on hand for emergencies.
- Highly concentrated power works quickly. The Chlorine Dioxide Cup Odor Removal System releases 15 to 20 ppm (parts per million) for the first two hours, and 5 ppm for another hour. After 5-6 hours, there will be zero ppm in your vehicle. In less than a day, your vehicle will be odorless!

Standard cup (3-6 hour treatment)
- Place the deodorizing microreactor pouch into the given cup and slowly pour the activation liquid onto the pouch.
- Place the cup in a cupholder or on the center console of your vehicle.
- Cleaning vapors will be released within minutes. Leave the cup in your vehicle for 3-6 hours depending on the severity of the odor.
- Once finished, you may wish to decontaminate your venting system. If so, start your vehicle and let it run for 30 minutes with the fan on recycle.
- After the odor has been removed, open your doors and windows for an hour so the vehicle can ventilate. Dispose of the cup.
Quick Release cup (20-30 minute treatment)
- Place the deodorizing microreactor pouch into the given cup and slowly pour the activation liquid onto the pouch.
- Place the cup in a cupholder or on the center console of your vehicle.
- Cleaning vapors will be released within minutes. Leave the cup in your vehicle for 20-30 minutes depending on the severity of the odor.
- Once finished, you may wish to decontaminate your venting system. If so, start your vehicle and let it run for 15 minutes with the fan on recycle (without the AC running).
- After the odor has been removed, open your doors and windows for an hour so the vehicle can ventilate. Dispose of the cup.
And just like that, without having to exert any effort, your car is free of putrid odors.

A chlorine dioxide vapor treatment, because it destroys smoke odor rather than masking it. The ClO2 gas reaches places where sprays cannot: seat foam, headliner felt, and the HVAC evaporator core. It oxidizes the compounds that cause the smell, so the odor does not return once the cabin airs out.
-
Run a Standard cup on the longer end of its 3 to 6 hour window, then ventilate for an hour. Most vehicles are odor-free after that single treatment. Smoke odors or organic matter that have been embedded for years in foam and padding may need a second cup after a deep interior cleaning. .
-
Yes, used as directed. Chlorine dioxide has been used in food and water treatment for over 50 years. During treatment the cabin must be empty: it releases 15 to 20 ppm for the first two hours. After 5 to 6 hours the level drops to zero, then you ventilate before driving.
-
No. Treat the cabin as off-limits during the active window. Place the cup, close all windows, and leave the vehicle alone. After treatment, open doors and windows for an hour before driving. Electronics can stay in place: the vapor dissipates fully and leaves no residue on screens or upholstery.
-
Yes, if the odor is musty, mildew-like, or long-sitting, the evaporator core is likely part of the problem. After the cup treatment, run the fan on recycle (AC off) for 30 minutes to pull ClO2 through the ducts. Skipping this is why odor sometimes returns when the AC first runs.
